(Thu 7/2/20009 4:30AM CDT) Does the internet empower speech and creativity, or does it simply create two classes of speaker and creator: a very elite class who owns the entire mass audience serving at the pleasure of a corporate master and an anonymous class of Twittering idiots who answer to nobody and have no audience? I suspect that what is going on now in the media is a precursor to how things will end up. The media business is more and more controlled by corporate interests that have a lot more at stake than ratings. Consider GE ... Is there any doubt that its media companies produce content that is influenced by the company's non-media interests? For a company like GE, its media business bottom line may be largely irrelevant, as its media business morphs into a propaganda arm for its larger corporate interests. Stand-alone media companies have been largely destroyed. "New" media is having trouble. Companies that produce populism may get a lot of traffic but I am not aware that they produce any more in the way of profits than their dot-bomb predecessors who were in the business of creating "eyeballs" that turned out to have very little cash value. When you consider how big the media has become it seems obvious that the economic pie should have exploded, but it is obvious that cannot be the case when so much of what passes as "content" is produced by people like me who do it for free and generate no revenue in any form by doing so. In short, the media business may be entering a golden age of more voices, more choices, and more freedom, but it may have already passed into a morass that will leave little more than propaganda machines and amateur bloggers.
